Concert Review: Alkaline Trio / Cursive – House of Blues – Cleveland, OH – 03/04/2010

Pop punk rockers Alkaline Trio paid the House of Blues in Cleveland a visit on Thursday with special guests indie rockers Cursive as well as rock act The Dear & Departed.  This was the second stop for Alkaline Trio who just started touring in support of their new release This Addiction.  The line-up of the evening was an interesting mix but still it looked to be a great evening of music for all who filled up the venue.

Most commonly known as the guy who tattoos along side Kat Von D on the reality show LA Ink, Dan Under and his band did their best to warm up the crowd with their straight forward rock music.  The crowd gave them the respect they deserved but it really did not look as if too many were really getting into them.  A couple fans sang along and gave support but the energy level was still rather low.

Nebraska’s Cursive on the other hand played a solid, yet interesting, set  that eventually caused a lot of cheer by the set’s end.  Hammering through “Some Red Handed Sleight Of Hand” as later playing “Art Is Hard” the band threw on an absolutely amazing show.  I especially enjoyed hearing “From The Hips” off their latest release Mama, I’m Swollen.  Digging deep into their catalog the band even played “Mothership Mothership, Do You Read Me?” which absolutely floored me.  It was clear though that not everyone around me was enjoying the indie, almost experimental, performance with a very vocal Tim Kasher but I will admit that there are some folk out there today looking into who exactly this Cursive band is.

Alkaline Trio took the stage in full force and started the night off with “This Addiction” off their latest release.  The band looked so comfortable on stage and Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano shuffled about on stage as Derek Grant beat the hell out of the drums.  Skiba announced in the middle of songs that he was at a photo shoot earlier in the day for some magazine called High Times admitting that “if it seems like I’m really stoned, it’s because I am.”   Needless to say the crowd went berserk.

Adding to the energy of the night the band carried onward with an amazing set playing old and new songs.  Seeing Andriano pick up the horn on “Lead Poisoning” was one of the highlights of my night for some reason.  I really enjoyed that track off their new album but seeing it live just made me appreciate it even more.  If that was not good enough, once the band finished that more poppy track they jumped back a few years and played “Mr. Chainsaw” only to return to new material again with “Dead On The Floor”.

Throughout the night I was continually impressed to see what song the band would play next.  Hearing “Fuck You Aurora” and later the Manson inspired “Sadie” the set list just kept getting better and better and the band just hit every song head-on with almost everyone in the house singing along.  Just when I thought think things could not get better the band played “’97”.  At that very moment I was completely contempt with Alkaline Trio’s set.

The band exited the stage with fans pleading for one more song.  I decided this might be a good time to make way to the back of the venue and to call it a night.  As I was walking back the crowd exploded in cheer as the band did a little switch up with Skiba on drums, Andriano on guitar, and Grant on bass and vocals.  The band appeased me by playing one of my favorite Misfits songs ever, “Attitude”.  All I could say was “are you kidding me” and stopped dead in my tracks and started singing along with everyone else.  It was the perfect way to end an amazing performance.  I was a happy concert goer.

Bonnaroo 2010 Or Bust

Today was like a musical draft for one of the biggest festivals in the US.  I speak of the 4 day festival Bonnaroo and today’s announcement has been a day long event as the initial line-up was introduced to all who were curious throughout the day via Twitter and MySpace.  This was the first time Bonnaroo has done something like there where they utilize other sites to slowly leak out fetival details.

The way that Bonnaroo chose to dish out the artists was annoying to me.  It was a novel idea but if you are like me you want to know everything at once and not have to wait over 12 hours for a line-up.  I hope next year they just go back to routine and hand everything out at once.

Having already been to Bonnaroo twice (2006 & 2009) I can tell you that the line-ups are generally full of an array of artists for everyone.  This year is without exception and I really am thinking hard about going again.  I had a great time last year and really could go for a road trip with friends again.  This time though I am going to go and enjoy it and not worry about covering it.  I missed out on a few good sets because I made promises of coverage on a site I could barely keep but I still kept to my word and was submitting nightly reviews as the sun was rising the next day.

The artist line-up is listed below and I am sure a few other acts will sneak in over the upcoming weeks.  Anyone else interested in attending?  I know it will be a good time as always – just look at all the bands and artists!

* More Artists to Be Announced! (Subject To Change As Well)

Rumors earlier in the month pointed to Roger Waters possibly playing the festival but I am sure that is a no go now.  Also word on the streets was that Mastodon was going to make an appearance as well.  One could only hope.

I’ll be posting stuff here and there through out the next few months.  Still have not fully committed but highly considering it…

Tickets are on sale now and at this time are $234.50 but that price will not last forever and they will jump to $249.50.  They also are going to have the payment plan again this year – 5 payments of $50.  Not too shabby!

Download This!: Backyard Tire Fire – “Good To Be”

Dear blog,

Today I had a long day at work and really just wanted to get up and run away.  The time was moving slow and my concentration was long gone by the lunchtime hour.  I tried listening to my iPod and nothing was capturing my attention.  I was having difficulties finding something to jam to and it was making the day crawl even slower.

I just was not having it.

Luckily I got an email from my pals at Thirty Tigers and everything changed.  They emailed me to tell me about a band called Backyard Tire Fire.  I admit I chuckled at the band name but knew it had to be something interesting if the three decade big cat people were sending out emails about them.  I decided to take a moment and check out the video…

Needless to say that was all it took for me to become a fan.  On February 16th the band will be releasing Good To Be on Kelsey Street Records / Thirty Tigers.

In support of the release the band will be touring all over the place and will be making a stop in Cleveland on May 1st at the Beachland Tavern.  I have a feeling it’s going to be one of those shows not to be missed.

Thirty Tigers had this to say about the release:

Over their eight-year career as a band, Backyard Tire Fire has created a presence in the music world that is hard to ignore. Their fifth full length release Good To Be was produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin and is a culmination of guitarist/vocalist Ed Anderson’s 13-year journey on the road of rock and roll. With this release Backyard Tire Fire delivers an album full of working-man songs that demonstrate their upbeat, glass half full approach to life.

Need something to do on February 6th?  Are you a fan of indie rock?  Folk music?

I think I can help you out.

Wisconsin’s The Daredevil Christoper Wright are making a stop at the Beachland Tavern on Feb. 6th.  If you like your indie rock poppy and especially folky you should join them.  If you can’t make it at least check out their MySpace page.

Jay Reatard Homicide?

In a recent blog, I posted the news about Jay Reatard‘s death.  At the time it was undetermined about how he died but apparently his death is now being investigated as a homicide.  According to The L.A. Record Memphis Police are looking for a possible suspect in the musician’s death.

Hearing this I decided to so some internet surfing and found out some interesting info…

It appears as if Jay Reatard had some hate towards someone according to Exclaim.ca.  Reading though the article it stated that Reatard had beef with New Jersey band Liquor Store. The garage punk outfit allegedly slashed the tires on Reatard’s tour van recently and Reatard did not take it lightly.

What is crazier is I read the last Twitter posted by Jay Reatard on 01/11/2010 at 3:24PM:

@jayreatard“I will give anyone a hundred bucks per tire that they pop on the band liquor stores van ! Yes I’m serious”

So who is this Liquor Store band and why did they slash Reatard’s tires in the first place?  Not trying to be CSI BHP here but looking at their MySpace page I noticed they just so happened to be in Tennessee for a couple of shows…right around the time Reatard was discovered dead.

Coincidence?  Only time will tell…

Regardless the world lost a good artist who may not have been well known but really made in impact with his style.

UPDATE:
According to a post on the Terminal Boredom message board, Reatard threatened members of Liquor Store with a chainsaw and hit a band member in the face with a disco ball.

Wait… did you say a chainsaw and a disco ball?  Well no wonder they slashed his tires!  Still the cause on the initial brawl is still unknown at this time as well as there is no proof that foul play has been involved.

Nashville Scene posted funeral information as well as supplied a Fox News cache to a story that was pulled off the internet.

Matador Records posted funeral information as well as well a personal entry from Matador co-owner/Matablog blogger Gerard Cosloy:

I was on a flight to NY this afternoon and when I landed there were about two dozen text messages about Jay Reatard’s passing. It is the height of understatement to say I’m upset, confused and deeply saddened by the loss of one of the more amazing people I’ve been fortunate to know.  In record company parlance, yeah, we’ve lost (let’s go down the checklist) a phenomenal performer, songwriter, and insatiable music lover.  But we’ve lost a great friend as well, and that’s the part that hurts the most.

We’re not the only ones feeling that way right now, obviously. Jay’s friends all over the country, heck, all over the world are dealing with this. I know his various scrapes over the years have made for cheap internet fodder, but the people who cared about him are gonna remember a real person that mattered to them.  Our thoughts are with that very large group of people this evening.
