Album Review: Thursday – No Devolución

I remember the first time I heard the one time post-hardcore/screamo outfit Thursday.  They were of a genre of music I swore I would never get into, but there was something about them I really was attracted to.  Over the years I have watched them mature into phenomenal musicians and it’s no surprise that they decided to try something differently on their sixth studio release.

No Devolución is perhaps the band’s most involved album to date.  It is not like any of their previous material and at times and really feels like a well put together work of genius.  Geoff Rickly still does wonders with his signing ability while the rest of the band seems to have really mellowed out this round.  This is the bands second release under Epitaph Records.

“Fast To The End”, a catchy rock jam, opened up the album.  Rickly and crew seemed to keep to that known Thursday sound intact with some screaming thrown in around.

“No Answers” without a doubt was my choice track thanks to the catchy synths that easily could be compared to MGMT.  The song flowed so well throughout with very poignant lyrics talking of relations with Rickly singing “No answers, no answers when you’re around” at the end of the track.  Sad track, but beyond amazing to listen to.

The piano playing throughout “Sparks Against The Sun” made for a nice, gentle feel throughout.  The song itself was easy on the ears with the synths and distorted bass lines backing calm singing.

“Open Quotes” on the other hand had a more aggressive approach.  Hinting back at some of older Thursday material, the track had a couple shouts and screams and a little added distorted guitar playing, but overall really could have been a tougher track.  It just seemed to dissolve by the end.

Starting slow was “Past And Future Ruins”, a killer track with heavy Muse matching guitar riffs as well as xylophone both over a steady floor tom beat.  Rickly had no problem showcasing his vocal ability throughout and even tosses it in a distorted mess a couple of times giving for a very loathing tone.

“Empty Glass” was a sad, sad song.  Although beautifully put together, the track was gloomy as hell and easily could bring the happiest person down to a whimpering lull.  The electronic driven music along the pitch-shifting singing was haunting yet almost comforting to listen to.

“A Gun In The First Act” was a darker sounding track with very NIN simular synthesizers in the background.  The more I listened to it, the more I heard NIN’s version of “Dead Souls” originally performed by Joy Division in it.  Overall the track was amazing and was one of my favorite cuts off the album.

“Turnpike Divides” brought the energy back with a old school Thursday feel to it.  The track is a no-place-like-home tribute to good ol’ New Jersey.  I loved the Bruce Springsteen reference, “it’s hard to sleep when you’re born to run.”  This was another song I enjoyed a lot and just stood out over all the other tracks.

Putting an end to the masterpiece called No Devolución was “Stay True”, a motivational track aimed at just about anyone who wants to give it a listen.  The Rollins-esque lyrics were quite stern yet compelling to follow along to.  Aimed at a novice in life, this song has the ability to shed guidance on those who are looking for answers.  Sometimes all it takes is a song for someone to guide them in the right direction.

No Devolución has made me a bigger Thursday fan.  Over the years, my music taste tends to change and I find myself getting discouraged sometimes are bands who never challenge themselves.  Sometimes the outcome is a disaster, but I have to hand it to Thursday, they put together an outstanding release without forgetting who they once were, and still are.

Thursday will be coming back to Cleveland on 7/23 during their tour with Taking Back Sunday at the House Of Blues.  Tickets are $27.50 and are on sale now.

Post Record Store Day Blues

Ignore the title of this post, I just thought it sounded cool.  I am going to ramble here – just a heads up…

Honestly , this year’s Record Store Day (RSD) did not exactly go to plan but it worked out entirely in my favor by the end of the day yesterday.

Record Poachers

A term my pal Eugene texted me when neither of us could find any of the wax we were looking for in retail stores on Saturday.

A record poacher is one of those folk out there who fancy a profit of mass proportions.  They snag up all the good RSD vinyl and throw it on eBay where people like me will pay outrageous amounts of money for items that normally cost $10-$20.   Some of these record poachers are actually shady store owners too who know damn well that they are cheating the purpose of RSD.

Knowing this, I still refuse to be defeated and try my luck on eBay.  I am not the only one either.

Why do we do it?  Because we are the reason RSD exists, we are the the vinyl collectors and sometimes we need to bite the bullet and pay a little more to get something we really want.

Example.  I really wanted the Deftones Covers LP.  It was sold out almost instantly across America.  Coincidentally it was also all over eBay going for $40 to $70.  Mind you there were only 3000 made.

I bid on it and was outbid immediately.  I knew that I should just forget about it.  I was bummed, but honestly, it is a record, I will live…

Right?

Lucky for me I have some amazing ass friends out there across the states and once they heard I was looking for that, as well as a couple other LPs,  they made every effort they could to search for them.

There is a Deftones LP waiting for me now.  I did not spend $452.87 on it either.  There are also a couple other RSD releases I had my eye on that will be accompanying that LP too.

I have some damn good friends out there.  I feel the need to emphasize that.

I am done rambling now.

Beyond my battle to get some of the RSD releases I wanted, I have to say that RSD 2011 was enjoyable.

How about a recap of RSD?  Ok…

There were about 100 people lined up in the rain outside of Music Saves waiting to get first dibs on the goods when I arrived around 11:30am.  That is dedication right there.

I sat in my car and chose to wait for my friends – and stay dry.

Come noon, my friends and I all perused Blue Arrow Records for a while, snagged up a couple things here and there, and just enjoyed the excitement that surrounded us.  I picked up the Rome 7″ I was looking for as well as some used records that caught my eye.

Once the line at Music Saves calmed down, we all took a peek in there to see if any scraps were left over.  I knew in advance of the Music Saves offerings and this year around there was not anything that got me too excited so I was ok with just grabbing a couple little things and saying hi to the owners and their special in-house phone answerer guy.

The Beachland opened their hallway to a couple of vendors who had some good finds.  I walked out with a Pagans cover 7″ as well as a Germs cover 7″ both totaling a whopping $4.  Not too shabby.

After kicking it on Waterloo we did the next best thing – went to Chili Peppers on 185th to feast.  Best burritos ever.

It’s actually become a tradition for me to do RSD and then pound a burrito at Chili Peppers with friends.  I did it last year, and I am pretty sure I will do it again next year.

I love me some RSD.  It’s the one day a year where I can just geek out on vinyl with friends and complete strangers.  Blue Arrow and Music Saves always do an amazing job with setting up for the big day and evening.

I skipped out on the free shows again this year in favor of hangouts with good peoples.

Good music was being spun and played at all the shops and everyone was in a good mood.  If only every holiday were like this.

Record Store Day 2011

I am more excited about Record Store Day(RSD) this Saturday than most typical commercialized holidays…ok, all holidays with the exception of that one you drink a lot on…

This Saturday is the day all you wax junkies.  I will be out about about Waterloo seeing what I can find in a sea of impressive limited edition RSD releases.

The two major RSD releases I am hoping to snag are the Deftones covers album and the Menzingers yellow limited edition vinyl (going to be tough to find).  I am also on the look out for a few 7″ splits including:  Green Day / Husker Du, Mastodon/ZZ Top and Mumford & Sons / Laura Marling.   It is safe to say I will find some other goodies too.

Lucky for me I have great friends in other states who will be keeping their eyes wide open for me for some of these releases.  I am sure they will ask me to return the favor and I am perfectly ok with that.

Music Saves and Blue Arrow Records both will be open at 12 o’clock to engage in one of the greatest days of the year.  Live bands and DJs will be present at both locations to entertain throughout the day.  Good times are going to happen.

I just hope it is not ice cold outside like it was last year.  I was freezing last year and then went to an Indians game after and froze more.  I do love all that is Cleveland and that is why I did it.  It probably did not help that it was just above 30 degrees and I wore shorts and a hoodie…

This yeah, however, I plan on skipping the baseball game.  I do plan on destroying a burrito at Chili Peppers on 185th afterwards though.

RIP Time Warner Cable Amphitheater (2001-2011)

It’s no shock to hear that the giant parking lot with a huge tent is closing in Cleveland.  No longer will I fry on the pavement at Warped Tours or any other concert that starts before sunset.

It was a good time we had, me and that so-called Amphitheater.

I can think back to a certain Warped Tour where my friend and I thought it was a good idea to blow almost $300 on beer alone and then trudge through a sea of sweaty kid yelling “get out of here you jerks, you phonies!”

Rancid memories at Tower City Amphitheater...

I have seen tons of bands there and even had my first real photo pass experience at a Black Sabbath Heaven & Hell show.  Earlier in that day I remember that I got to sit in on an interview with Rob Flynn of Machine Head on their tour bus.  I was more stoked that the AC was running…

Rib cook-offs, shitty punk bands, amazing punk bands, hip-hop shows…yeah I was there.  (I even saw Pink there once…)

It’s amazing that after 10-years the place is finally going to shut down.  For the record, it is not shutting down because of anything more than a casino buying the property.

Sadly we will not be seeing any casion action until 2013, but that’s not too far away.

The good news about this is that there is still another outdoor venue in Cleveland that promises to host as many shows as possible.  Let’s just hope the bands keep rolling through Cleveland.

Nautica is now going to be called Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica.

I still call it the Jake and I am still going to call the venue Nautica…
