I am Cleveland

Out of all the places I could have been born, I was born in Cleveland, OH.  Some may find it difficult or depressing to grow up in a suburb of a dying steel manufacturing city but I myself consider it fortunate.   I like where I am from and even though I sometimes wish to live life elsewhere I think, in fact I know, I would miss the city of Cleveland.

Realistically I am admitting that Solon was the city I was born and raised.  I grew up in that city and while doing so I saw change.  By the year 2000 the population doubled and Solon turned more upper class, a bracket I never fit in.  Restaurants and stores were built on land that once housed the city’s first school or marshland.  New schools had to be built to house all the children that were brought in to the city.  It was change I did not agree with.

One change I dealt with was new neighbors.  I watched the forest next to my parents property turn in to a upper class haven full of rude arrogant people I never called neighbors.  How arrogant?  Let’s just say one of the features of this high rolling development were man made ponds in which one of the new residents saw it as a jet ski racetrack… The successful ass also allowed his kids to destroy my folks property and would frequently dump his yard waste.  I never rebelled at him as much as I wanted to but I was happy to hear he had to leave that house for breaking the law.  What a jerk.

The good thing about Solon is that I had made amazing friends, many of which I still am friends with today.  My neighbors growing up put up with parties my brother and I threw.  Growing up was great as a kid but when I turned into a teenager and Dunkin Donuts kicked us out of their parking lot or we wanted to see a show Cleveland was just a short drive away.

Solon was a great city to grow up in.  Next to a great school system, there were awesome shops including the one of most missed music shops ever, Disc Den (rip).  When I was a kid that was the place to go.  Mike at Disc Den ran a great shop but could not afford to move on with sales dropping due to corporately run book stores that sold music as well (yes, I worked there, but in my defense I was a barista!!!).

Important people came from Solon as well.  Mike Cartellone, once the drummer of Damn Yankees and now current drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, was from Solon and he even played football with me when I was just a little tyke.  There were even some pro football players born in the city including Kim Herring who was a few grades above me.

So why did I even mention I am Cleveland and where am I going with this?  You might be wondering why I just told you my life story and I know it was not that good so let’s continue…

When you grow up you meet friends and lose friends, it’s a life long process.  Luckily my close friends happened to like music and hanging out.  As soon as I was old enough I started going to Cleveland to see shows.  I can not even tell you how many shows I have been to in my life time but I can tell you most of the most memorable took place in the mid to late 90’s, right about the time when I was a raging punk rocker.

Cleveland has some great music venues.  I can write all day about the shows I have seen.  Bands that were nothing and are huge now I got to see as they hardly had anyone in the crowd cheering for them.  Venues that have shut down or moved to the other side of town, been there.

I really don’t feel like writing about all that right now.

I want to talk about two things that recently happened to me that remind me why I like Cleveland so much:

Cleveland Browns Stadium
Cleveland Browns Stadium

First off…. The Cleveland Browns.  I am a Brownie for life and win or lose will always support the team.  I recently witnessed the Browns spank the Giants Monday Night Football style.  It was a great experience.  Even if almost everyone there was drunk and belligerent well before the game even started it was fun.

My brother and I got a pair of tickets so we decided to truck down early to tailgate.  As we made way to the community lot we passed the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame Museum.  I got to see Johnny Cash‘s tour bus parked in front of the Rock Hall and after checking to see if it was unlocked (I wanted to go on a joyride) we continued to a parking lot about a mile away from the Cleveland Browns stadium.

Tailgating was a treat alone with some folk starting their partying ritual at 9:00am, almost 12 hours before kick off.  By the time my brother and I met up with some friends at the community lot around 6:30pm there were people falling over drunk but smiling on the way down.  Everyone was decked out in Browns attire and DJs for a day were doing their best to play requests.  Food was being consumed and everytime a brave Giants fan walked past crowds of folk would stop during mid beer bong to point and call that fan an a$$h@le.  It was funny to see so many people get into it.  It was the first time I engaged in tailgating and it certainly will not be the last.

If you look you might be able to see the stadium on the bottom left. The community lot was just a wee bit far...

The game itself was even more insane.  Yelling and screaming and more drinking.  I can honestly say the Browns have the greatest fans ever.  We sat pretty far up but it didn’t matter.  All the fans around me, many season ticket holders, were great to cheer along with as the Browns beat the Giants 35 to 14.

Another reason I like Cleveland so much… Last Friday’s trip to meet Derek Hess.

I’ve already interviewed the man himself but this past Friday I had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

Along with my wonderful wife, my friends Matt and Adam joined us to a book store in Tremont, a historic neighborhood just outside of downtown Cleveland.  We all went to Visible Voice Books where I get to meet Derek Hess and author Kent Smith who both came together and wrote Please God Save Us.  Both gentlemen were very kind and autographed my book that Matt purchased for me (thanks pal!).  Kent Smith even asked to get a photo of us all where I look like a complete retard in it (see below for proof)!  Once I read the book a few times over I will be sure to post something on here about it.  If you are a fan of Derek Hess and wish to venture into his politically charged art, you need this book.

After Visible Voice books we went to nearby Lakewood and had dinner at a local bar.  The name escapes me at this time but we dined outside at the patio.  Even though it was a tad on the chilly side there were gas powered outdoor heaters that kept us warm.

We all sat around and chatted as we ate our meals.  While hanging out, I could not help but think how much I have enjoyed Cleveland all these years.  It seems like there is always something to do when you you venture in the city.  There is also more still to be done and I know there will be many more trips to that wonderful city.

Like I said I could talk all day about Cleveland but just not today.  I am sure other folk from Cleveland can agree it is a hell of a city with a lot to offer.

This was my story, for now.  Here’s some other photos I took with my crappy camera (except the 1st, that was taken w/ Kent Smith’s camera):

Wes Borland in Marilyn Manson?

Black Light Burns (Wes Borland 2nd from left)
Black Light Burns (Wes Borland 2nd from left)

Ok so apparently I am late on this one…

Former famed Limp Bizkit guitarist (and current member of Black Light Burns) Wes Borland has apparently joined forces with Marilyn Manson, at least temporary while the band tours.  The last time he lent his touring talent was to From First To Last in 2005-2006, he then moved on.

According to BlabberMouth.net:

Manson said, “We have a new guitar player that’s gonna play for the first time tomorrow; it’s the first time we’ll play on stage [together]. His name is Wes Borland and he used to be in a really terrible band that he left because he felt that it was a destructive force in art, and he has his own band, BLACK LIGHT BURNS, but now he is in MARILYN MANSON. We don’t know how permanent that is, but starting tomorrow [Aug 16th, 2008] will be the first step. So this will be the most indestructible MARILYN MANSON.”

Also within the same article:

Manson‘s longtime bassist, Twiggy Ramirez, toured with Manson earlier this year for the first time since 2002. The two co-wrote “Antichrist Superstar”, “Mechanical Animals” and “Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)” together and Manson told The Salt Lake Tribune this past spring that he couldn’t be happier about Ramirez returning.

This could be something huge.  Marilyn Manson is currently in the middle of recording a new album that is slated to land next year.  If Wes Borland continues to stay with the band after the tour he really could help contribute to the best Marilyn Manson album since Antichrist Superster (that of course would be my favorite album).  Twiggy & Borland could be an amazing matchup.

I find it funny that I randomly came across this recently as I just added Limp Bizkit’s debut CD Three Dolla Bill Yall into itunes.  Why?  Was it because I missed the nu-metal sensation?  Perhaps.  I actually think the album is good and only took it out of my collection in the past because I was so burnt out on Limp Bizkit.

I was always a fan of Wes Borland though.  Big Dumb Face is hilarious.  Here, just check out this video and you may agree:

Weird.  I love it though.

Then there is Black Light Burns.  I had no idea this band even existed until recently and to be honest I am pissed.  How could I miss a band that not only had Wes Borland fronting it but also Josh Freese (NIN, A Perfect Circle, and The Vandals) and Danny Lohner (NIN and A Perfect Circle)???

If you have not heard of Black Light Burns you might want to check out the following video just to give you a taste of their sound:

Black Light Burns recently released a deluxe version of Cover Your Heart And The Anvil Pants Odyssey.

Look for Marilyn Manson’s new album to drop some time next year.

Happy Birthday Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani w/ No Doubt
Gwen Stefani w/ No Doubt

Pop icon Gwen Stefani turned 39 today!

Wow.  She still is looking fiiiiine.  Of course this is an old pic to the left, but I am sure you have seen her recent photos.

Seriously now, why do I know this?  Well because Fox 8 News kept playing her songs on their show this morning and they keep wishing her a happy birthday.  So I guess I will too.

I am not a fan of Gwen Stefani when it comes to her solo career.

I much prefer No Doubt.  Sure, she has not damaged her image too much by going solo but by doing so she has attracted a whole new fan base.  In fact she is quite the popular one.  I myself though can not stand much of her hip hop-ish pop powerful songs.  I find the songs too much for me to handle.

I prefer the classics, you know, when it was pop ska punk.  Does that make sense?  She was cute, innocent, and did not wear bling.

Gwen Stefani left No Doubt to work on her solo project which was supposed to be a new wave sound but to me sounds a little different from that.

Having married Gavin Rossdale, former front man of Bush, the couple now has two children and pretty much successfully manage to stay out of the blood thirsty paparazzi grasp.  They to me are the smart couple and just keep to themselves for the sake of family.  No point in mixing work and him right?

Now Gavin Rossdale tried his own luck and released his own solo attempt Wanderlust earlier this year that in my opinion was not that good.  I wrote a review about it and I must say there were a couple of winners on the disc but for the most part it was not that good.  It could have just been me of course.

Rumor has it the remaining members of No Doubt have been writing new material and are waiting for Gwen Stefani to return although she may be taking her time as just just gave birth to her second child over the summer.

When she returns is up to the birthday girl and I hope it is soon.

Here’s a Gewn Stefani time line for ya:

And now for some solo material… (also when she went a little gangsta)

I cringe when I hear this…

And this… (even worse)

She is still pleasing to the eyes though…and certainly does not look 39. Let’s hope with age she becomes a little wiser and calls up the boys from No Doubt to start recoding some new material.

New Radiohead Videos Thanks To Creative Minds

Earlier this year, “The Home Of Animation” website Aniboom held a contest in conjunction with Radiohead to help create a new music video for the band using a song from the band’s recent release In Rainbows.  A cash prize of $10,000 was to be awarded to the winner of the competition who could come up with the best storyboard and video-clip to astound Radiohead themselves and Aniboom.

The result was 5 finalists with video-clips that Radiohead collectively voted on.  Radiohead was supposed to choose only 1 of the 5 finalists to create a full length video.  Radiohead decided that they liked the 4 grand finalists so much that they contributed and extra $30,000 to help create each of the four videos.  Not only did the 4 winners collect some serious cash for their creative talent, they also each have their own bragging rights.

Each have their own style.  Check them out.  I like the video for “Reckoner” the most.

Missed Festival, Wedding, & 3OH3!

I’ve had a few days off now and it all comes to an end in less than 5 hours.  I took some time away from work to be with friends as one of us was getting married.  I normally do not like weddings as they are very formal and of course I am not a church goer.

I feel like I canceled some plans too in order to attend the wedding.  I thought I told Matt that I was going to hook up with him sometime this weekend as he and his friend were going to be in Kent for We The People Fest.  I told Matt that my wife and I were possibly going to see Hawthorne Heights and Ben Taylor play at the fest on Friday and also check out the rest of the event but in turn we decided to crash the wedding rehearsal party.  Saturday was an all day event for the wedding, and Sunday we were too pooped to go out there and see the final day, plus the Cleveland Browns were playing. (Finally, a win!)

Sorry Matt…  I hope it was a good time. I hope you can forgive me and tell me a little about it…if you went.

I am sorry too, Chuck Norris, as I know you were speaking on Sunday.  I know you wanted me to be there.

So let me tell you a little about the wedding…

My friends Sam and Ryan decided to tie the knot.  Sam is a few years younger than me and I have known him for a while.  He grew up in the same city as I did.  I met him through friends and thanks to beer and punk rock music we became friends.

Sam met Ryan, they fell in love, and got married.  They had a wedding locally and my wife and I were invited along with plenty of friends. The neat thing about the wedding is that it was sort of a punk rock wedding with a lot of guests being in local punk rock acts at one time or currently.  Sam wore Chuck Taylors as did the groomsmen and when the happy couple entered the reception hall “Hey Ho Let’s Go” was played.

I sat at a table with my friends who some were also members of The Facials.  They are a Cleveland punk rock band that has played tons of shows in Cleveland and Akron as well has opened for Rancid and UK Subs.  They are currently working on a new album and I will be sure to share it once it is pressed.

Also as the wedding were friends of mine who were once in the now defunct punk acts such as the Narcoleptics X5, the Beat Kids, and Novallos.  Its been a while since some of the bands played local shows.  It was awesome to see that even that some of the bands separated that they still remained friends.  The groom was actually a member of all three of the bands.

At one time during the day, the former drummer of Novallos, Ryan,  was sitting next to me at a bar in between the wedding and reception, and we were talking about how he moved to Colorado and recently moved back.  Before long we started talking about music.  He asked me if I was at the Warped Tour this summer and when I said I was he asked if I saw a band called 3OH3!.  I said hell yes.

I told Ryan that I loved 3OH3! and caught their entire set at the Warped Tour.  Knowing that they were from Colorado I already knew what he was going to tell me.  He knew them.  I was stoked to hear Ryan tell stories about them. He then told me that they would be playing in Cleveland in November and asked me and my wife if we wanted to hang out with them.  I thought that was pretty awesome.  We shall see what happens.

The band is relatively new but has been making a strong impact on many music lovers.  Their mix of emo, punk, and crunk really made me a fan.  I reviewed their debut Want and will post it in my archives on here.

If I do happen to kick it with 3OH3! I will be sure to let you all know how it was.
