Post Record Store Day Blues

Ignore the title of this post, I just thought it sounded cool.  I am going to ramble here – just a heads up…

Honestly , this year’s Record Store Day (RSD) did not exactly go to plan but it worked out entirely in my favor by the end of the day yesterday.

Record Poachers

A term my pal Eugene texted me when neither of us could find any of the wax we were looking for in retail stores on Saturday.

A record poacher is one of those folk out there who fancy a profit of mass proportions.  They snag up all the good RSD vinyl and throw it on eBay where people like me will pay outrageous amounts of money for items that normally cost $10-$20.   Some of these record poachers are actually shady store owners too who know damn well that they are cheating the purpose of RSD.

Knowing this, I still refuse to be defeated and try my luck on eBay.  I am not the only one either.

Why do we do it?  Because we are the reason RSD exists, we are the the vinyl collectors and sometimes we need to bite the bullet and pay a little more to get something we really want.

Example.  I really wanted the Deftones Covers LP.  It was sold out almost instantly across America.  Coincidentally it was also all over eBay going for $40 to $70.  Mind you there were only 3000 made.

I bid on it and was outbid immediately.  I knew that I should just forget about it.  I was bummed, but honestly, it is a record, I will live…

Right?

Lucky for me I have some amazing ass friends out there across the states and once they heard I was looking for that, as well as a couple other LPs,  they made every effort they could to search for them.

There is a Deftones LP waiting for me now.  I did not spend $452.87 on it either.  There are also a couple other RSD releases I had my eye on that will be accompanying that LP too.

I have some damn good friends out there.  I feel the need to emphasize that.

I am done rambling now.

Beyond my battle to get some of the RSD releases I wanted, I have to say that RSD 2011 was enjoyable.

How about a recap of RSD?  Ok…

There were about 100 people lined up in the rain outside of Music Saves waiting to get first dibs on the goods when I arrived around 11:30am.  That is dedication right there.

I sat in my car and chose to wait for my friends – and stay dry.

Come noon, my friends and I all perused Blue Arrow Records for a while, snagged up a couple things here and there, and just enjoyed the excitement that surrounded us.  I picked up the Rome 7″ I was looking for as well as some used records that caught my eye.

Once the line at Music Saves calmed down, we all took a peek in there to see if any scraps were left over.  I knew in advance of the Music Saves offerings and this year around there was not anything that got me too excited so I was ok with just grabbing a couple little things and saying hi to the owners and their special in-house phone answerer guy.

The Beachland opened their hallway to a couple of vendors who had some good finds.  I walked out with a Pagans cover 7″ as well as a Germs cover 7″ both totaling a whopping $4.  Not too shabby.

After kicking it on Waterloo we did the next best thing – went to Chili Peppers on 185th to feast.  Best burritos ever.

It’s actually become a tradition for me to do RSD and then pound a burrito at Chili Peppers with friends.  I did it last year, and I am pretty sure I will do it again next year.

I love me some RSD.  It’s the one day a year where I can just geek out on vinyl with friends and complete strangers.  Blue Arrow and Music Saves always do an amazing job with setting up for the big day and evening.

I skipped out on the free shows again this year in favor of hangouts with good peoples.

Good music was being spun and played at all the shops and everyone was in a good mood.  If only every holiday were like this.

Record Store Day 2011

I am more excited about Record Store Day(RSD) this Saturday than most typical commercialized holidays…ok, all holidays with the exception of that one you drink a lot on…

This Saturday is the day all you wax junkies.  I will be out about about Waterloo seeing what I can find in a sea of impressive limited edition RSD releases.

The two major RSD releases I am hoping to snag are the Deftones covers album and the Menzingers yellow limited edition vinyl (going to be tough to find).  I am also on the look out for a few 7″ splits including:  Green Day / Husker Du, Mastodon/ZZ Top and Mumford & Sons / Laura Marling.   It is safe to say I will find some other goodies too.

Lucky for me I have great friends in other states who will be keeping their eyes wide open for me for some of these releases.  I am sure they will ask me to return the favor and I am perfectly ok with that.

Music Saves and Blue Arrow Records both will be open at 12 o’clock to engage in one of the greatest days of the year.  Live bands and DJs will be present at both locations to entertain throughout the day.  Good times are going to happen.

I just hope it is not ice cold outside like it was last year.  I was freezing last year and then went to an Indians game after and froze more.  I do love all that is Cleveland and that is why I did it.  It probably did not help that it was just above 30 degrees and I wore shorts and a hoodie…

This yeah, however, I plan on skipping the baseball game.  I do plan on destroying a burrito at Chili Peppers on 185th afterwards though.

EP Review: Ninja Gun – Roman Nose

A few years back I was handed a CD by this band called Ninja Gun. All I could think in my head was what in the hell is a Ninja Gun and why is there a peach on the front cover?

Prior to listening to that album, I assumed that they were going to be just another screaming, loud and young act that I would care less about and almost passed it up.  I am glad my curiosity got the best of me though as  I was sorely shocked once I  heard what Ninja Gun was all about

They were more of a melodic folk/rock/country driven act that impressed me well past my expectations.  To this day their debut release, Restless Rubes, is spun in my household regularly.

On April 12th Ninja Gun will release a four-song EP entitled Roman Nose on Sabot Productions.  This is the band’s follow up teaser to that 2008 debut Restless Rubes that I almost passed over.

Led by Jonathan Coody, the band has toured with many a punk act in their time thanks to being less than an hour away from Gainsville, the punk rock capital of Florida.  Regardless of their sound, they have always had no problem keeping the punk fans entertained.

Starting off the EP was “That’s Not What I Heard”, a poppy yet chilled-out track that carried layered acoustic  guitars setting a certain mood for a good ol’ porch hangout with friends.  As relaxed as it sounded though, the lyrics were pungent and well-written.

The track “Hot Rain” tells the story of the demise in farming in the band’s hometown.  Just listening to this track I can hear improvement in the band’s sound.  It just sounded so well put together.

“Lepers In Love”, a tune about a  seemingly unjust relationship, was a killer track.  The song carries a certain slow-waltzing feeling at the beginning but rocks out shortly after.

The mellow “Roman Nose” on the other-hand, told the tale of a good man selling an “old thing” an ultimate token of love for his special someone.  Musically it was such a sorrow-sounding song, but became beautiful once the lyrics dissolved in my mind.

All I could think while listening to this EP is how funny it is that Ninja Gun is known to tour with punk bands yet I know they would have no problem playing along side Lucero or opening up for Wilco or even The Avett Brothers

I find it humorous that there are a peaches incorporated on the EP’s artwork now knowing that their hometown of Valdosta, GA is surrounded by peach farms.  The first time I saw the cover art for Restless Rubes and the lone peach sitting there, I could not gather why there was a peach on it.  Come on folks, I am from Ohio…

Valdolsta can be a little busy downtown, but the surrounding areas are quiet towns with not a lot to do.  Trust me, I’ve been there.  It looks like the type of city many folk dream of escaping from and moving on to bigger and better things, but they don’t – not because they are prisoners of the city, but because it’s a really chill and relaxing place to live.

Ninja Gun was once a hidden jem but I am thinking that is all going to be changing very soon.  Roman Nose is just a taste of what this small-town band has in store for their next full release and I could not be happier for them.

Free Fireworks!

Detroit’s Fireworks have just posted a free track available for download in anticipation of their May 24th release of Gospel

CLICK HERE to check it out the track called “Summer”.

Guitarist Chris Mojan had this to say about the upcoming release:

Gospel represents Fireworks better than anything we’ve done in the past. I think it really is the photo for the fundamentals we started this band on. The songs came so naturally and working with Brian (McTernan) pushed them and us to a level we’ve never came close to reaching in the past. Fireworks Lives.”

Gospelis now available for pre-order at: www.merchdirect.com/fireworks.

Atari Teenage Riot Is Baaaaaaaaaaaccccckkkkk…

After an 11-year hiatus, Atari Teenage Riot is back. Is This Real? will be dropping in June on Dim Mak Records.

This. Is. The. Awesome.

I can not tell you how excited I am.  This is like a dream come true.  Many of my friends know of my obsession with this band.  I was lucky enough to catch them once in my lifetime.

To make this dream a reality, I have two songs from the upcoming release and I must say, wow.  These guys (and gal) have not changed a bit.

Check out “Activate”:

Atari Teenage Riot - Activate

Check out “Blood In My Eyes”:

Atari Teenage Riot - Blood In My Eyes

About the songs:

“Activate!” starts the album with Atari Teenage Riot’s most concise statement of intent yet. On a backing of explosive 1991 hardcore jungle synths, super collider bass kicks, and guitar shrapnel Alec, Nic, and Kidtronik spurn us into a campaign of equality, activation, and eradication of ignorance.

“Blood In My Eyes” features Nic Endo on lead vocal. She speaks out for the multitude of women who have become the victims of human trafficking, their sexuality exploited for financial gain right under the gaze of the ineffectual governments of the self-proclaimed civilized west. Nic, wholly in tune with her trademark Japanese face-paint depicting “Resistance,” makes her point in the inimitable Atari way.
